I tested a Session in a Virtual Reality Movie | Read Full Story

This is a movie that has only the name. Both in its development and in the experience it offers. The "Pickup VR cinema", based in Paris proclaims "first French cinema virtual reality". In reality, it seems that there have been similar initiatives but it is accessible and provides a good opportunity to learn about this new leisure field. Devoid of any experience in virtual reality games and other Oculus headsets, I tried it. Bluffing.

The small room is located rue de Turenne in the Marais in Paris. Behind the red curtain off its facade, 16 comfortable swivel chairs white (to be seated but mobile), a virtual reality helmet on the forehead, headphones on and go for 40 minutes of immersion. For its launch, the film was chosen to present a selection of four films of various genres. A poetic and graphic work on a romantic encounter ( "love"), a horror film containing all the canons of the genre ( "Killer Deal"), a dizzying and chilling expedition in space ( "Sonar") and a documentary rhinoceros ( "the Ark"). Now it offers thematic sessions.
In Virtual Reality, Nobody Can Hear Your Scream

Both say the experience has nothing to do with such cinema we know it. Rumor has it that the 1896 spectators frightened face "Entering a station of La Ciotat in the process" of Louis Lumière, I can tell you they were never locked in a hotel room dingy with a bloodthirsty killer armed with a machete. For not only the blood of his victims is projected to big jets on you but in favor of a capricious light bulb goes off and comes on, the assassin arises in your back. Fortunately, the swivel chair allows it to dodge. We must look ahead, behind, to the side and do a little check on the ceiling to make sure the killer is not caught it. insured surprise and irrepressible screams. But in the space of virtual reality, nobody can hear you scream. You are alone. The point of friendly hands to shake, breast where to snuggle. Yes, your spouse is there, somewhere, in a chair next to it, but you do not know where. Groping you might take you an elbow in the face and itself is also very afférer to save the killer or attempt to dodge the rocky edges of an asteroid, while his spaceship breaks up. To rest a little diving in the savannah White rhino is welcome, the documentary script is a bit boring but the effect, "I'm in Africa" immediate.

Programming SELECTIVE

Technically, the image resolution is not great but the relief effect particularly striking in the space film "Sonar" (awarded at Sundance). And as, after ten minutes, the neophytes like me, you really knew they were in an immersive space, they are agitated in every direction to enjoy all there is to see 360 degrees. The technology used is the GearVR of Samsung works with a smartphone without being connected to a computer. No strings attached. No not seasick feeling as we can apprehend. Only small problem, the fog that accumulates in the helmet and ultimately disturb a little vision. We find these headsets on the market for just under a hundred euros with the ability to download movies on platforms from Samsung or Oculus. But the "pickup VR movie" sells not only its equipment but also its programming expertise. For virtual reality, related contents are teeming. At this point, the film offers chills sessions (horror films) and sessions French touch (French team). Before investing so we can count on some support.
